Project LIVE SPACE aims to create an environment for training of electronic/electroacoustic music performers/creators in a changing society. There is no longer dispute that musicians need many capabilities to build and sustain a career. It can take multiple attempts to become established in music, these can include entrepreneurship, multiple roles in interdisciplinary contexts, finding a niche and the need to retain and refine technical skills. Higher music education institutions have a responsibility to understand future lives in music and to equip students to be able to shape these including their development as agents of social change and learners. Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, UNIARTS/ Sibelius Academy, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Lund University / Malmö Academy of Music, Norwegian Music Academy, Bergen University / Grieg Academy, Gothenburg University / Academy of Music and Drama and Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre offer solid competences in the academic areas to be addressed – composition and music performance with an objective balanced mix of compatibility and complementarity in their specializations and approaches.
This intensive course builds on previous international activities and expertise trying to tackle the above-mentioned challenges and is the next step forward to facilitate students create a profile suitable to the current requirements in the field of contemporary electroacoustic music. It addresses a significant gap in the current education offerings with a student-centered open curriculum, open to composers/performers as creative artists, working with sound, exploring different disciplines and using new media, instruments and sound skills as possible resources, with a focus on public community-oriented artistic performance work. It will foster the three year set-up of creative projects, searching for new formats through interdisciplinary thinking and creative impact.
Project will be held at the Music Innovation Studies Centre (MiSC) of LMTA which is working with assisting composers and music performers working with music technology since 2012. MiSC will contribute by offering expertise of diverse techniques of adapting and implementing electroacoustic material in various contexts. Students will be facilitated to develop and perform their creative electroacoustic projects in institution and outside with a focus on space as acoustical as well as societal entity. This experience will enable students to explore and try out directions of their artistic ideas and impactful synergy of music and technology. Students will also be able to experiment with spatial sound and immersive media if required.
Main objective of the LIVE SPACE project is to create and test teaching for composer/performer students working with electroacoustic music and technology by offering them composition and performance knowledge and artistic practice in the society. It will also build a basis for stronger inclusion of this multidisciplinary approach in the musicians’ curriculum of partner institutions.
